EL CAMALEÓN, HOLE BY HOLE |
|
El Camaleón Golf Club at the Mayakoba resort is another masterpiece by Greg Norman, plays to a par 71 for the professional competition. The course bends through three distinct landscapes - tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bisected by massive limestone canals. The course even incorporates a cenote- an underground cavern common to the area- into the heart of the opening fairway on the 7th hole.
In 2007, El Camaleón made history by becoming the first golf course to host an official PGA TOUR event in México and the first official PGA TOUR event ever contended outside of the United States or Canada.

THE STORY BEHIND THE EL CAMALEÓN TROPHY |
|
Once the competition is completed, the champion of the Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN is crowned and the beautiful El Camaleón trophy appears on the 18th green for the award ceremony. This unique piece has been awarded to the champion for 13 consecutive years, and is one of the most beautiful trophies awarded on the PGA TOUR.
Weighing 33 pounds, and in the shape of a small chameleon - a small arboreal reptile with bulging eyes, that lives in the area of the Riviera Maya due to its warm climate – the trophy is a symbol of success the champion takes home as another memory of his triumph.
The artist of this emblematic piece is the Mexican sculptor Federico Cantú, also known as Xikincho, who has a brilliant career of more than 35 years in the field, and almost three decades living in Playa del Carmen.
Cantú, spends one month to create this one of a kind trophy and he uses limestone from the Quintana Roo region as the base of his work. The El Camaleón trophy is mounted on a tropical wood base.
“I try to convey art that can be archaic, because it is made of stone, and with tools such as chisel and hammer, but with a modern line. It is a rustic procedure, but one that becomes a contemporary result”, said Cantú. The artist recognizes that, in order to sculpt, "one must look inward into the stone, observe and then do magic, melting the stone, with the mind, to be able to bring out what is hidden". The El Camaleón trophy has become a superb work of modern sculpture in Mexico.

The Reserve at Mayakoba is the jewel in the Crown of Mayakoba, being the only development conceived and developed to be exclusively the residence and home of a privileged few. The location is one of its greatest virtues, between the jungle, mangroves and cenotes; and its spectacular views to the canals and El Camaleón Golf Course, make its owners possess a majestic landscape, exclusively for them and their loved ones.
