El Camaleón Golf Club - Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, México
First Round Interview: Carlos Ortiz
Q. What was it like actually out on the course?
CARLOS ORTIZ: It was windy, but we got maybe 30 seconds combined of rain, so we got actually really lucky. I guess it's raining now.
Q. And at what point could you tell that you were getting in a pretty good rhythm?
CARLOS ORTIZ: When I made like a 60-footer for eagle on 5, I knew it was going to be a pretty good day. I was in control of my game. It's one of those where you hit a good drive, it kind of sits down in the fairway and you feel like you're going to get a flyer and it's going to come out soft, but I'm really happy the way I played.
Q. Anything different for you inside the ropes following Houston?
CARLOS ORTIZ: No, the same, same thing. Trying to put it on the fairway, on the green and make the putts.
Q. What is it about Mayakoba -- you were T-2 last year, playing well once again this year -- that seems to bring out some of your better performances?
CARLOS ORTIZ: I don't know, I guess I like it. I love playing at home. Maybe the Mexican food.
Q. And finally, just obviously playing in Mexico, how different is it for you from like an energy standpoint? Friends, family around.
CARLOS ORTIZ: It's great. Even though we don't have fans like other years, you can really tell, but there's enough people where you can feel the vibe and the cheers. It's great that they let a little bit of people come in.
