First Round Interview: Viktor Hovland
Q. A blustery day, what was working for you?
VIKTOR HOVLAND: I hit it really solid today. It was really windy early on today and we were kind of just trying to hit greens, which I did. I think I only missed two greens today. Missed a lot of good opportunities early, but after the eagle on the fifth hole, that kind of opened up a little bit so was able to finish strong. Feel good about my game.
Q. You were even par through your first 13 holes. Did you know that that upcoming stretch was an area you could capitalize on?
VIKTOR HOVLAND: Yeah, they set the tees up on 5 and it was straight downwind, so I knew that was a pretty gettable hole. Yeah, with the par 5s and the short par 3 there, you can make some birdies coming in, but it's not given; you've got to hit some shots and you've got to make the putts. I was just hoping that I could carry some momentum from that eagle and finish strong, so happy that happened.
Q. Since the Rocket Mortgage, that was your last top-10. How would you kind of characterize your play of late?
VIKTOR HOVLAND: I think I just squeaked outside the top-10 that week as well. I've been doing a lot of good stuff since the restart, but kind of had one area of my game that's been slacking every week, so that's been kind of keeping me from contending. I've been making putts fine and doing well, but I feel like I've really made gains in almost every part of my game since then, which I'm very happy about. It's just a matter of kind of putting it all together.
Houston, I had a great putting week but my irons were not very good that week. This week I would say my irons are a little bit better. Didn't have the best putting day today, but hopefully we can change that and just put everything together.
