Four Months To Go Until The PGA TOUR Returns To Cancun And Riviera Maya For The 2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic
Mayakoba To Celebrate 12 Years Of Professional Golf
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q.ROO (July 12, 2024) – The Mayakoba Golf Classic will crown its new champion in less than four months from today as the Mayakoba Resort will celebrate 12 years of professional golf this year. 132 PGA TOUR players will return to El Camaleón Golf Club from November 5-11 to compete for a US$7.2 million purse in the 2018 edition of the annual event.
Once again, the tournament will be televised and broadcast through the PGA TOUR’s global distribution network to more than 220 countries and territories around the world reaching more than 1 billion households. Additionally ESPN Mexico, Fox Sports Latin America, Claro Sports, Golf Channel Latin America and other media members will produce recap shows with highlights, interviews and other related content, promoting Mayakoba and the regions of Cancun and Riviera Maya as top tourism destinations.
For the 12th edition, Mayakoba and tournament organizers and sponsors have elected to use the name Mayakoba Golf Classic, to capitalize on the international exposure for the Mayakoba brand and to continue promoting the resort and the destinations of Cancun and Riviera Maya.
Throughout its history, the tournament has received tremendous support and leadership from the tourism authorities of the country and the state of Quintana Roo. Dario Flota, Director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, explained that the Cancun and Riviera Maya regions continue to set the standard as leaders with the highest quality of hotel services and infrastructure., as seen and experienced by the PGA TOUR annually.
“We are very proud that our region has been able to enjoy the international and national spotlight for the past 12 years as home to the best golf in Latin America,” Flota said. “We are once again ready for the pros to visit and face the challenging El Camaleón Golf Club; and also for all the international and domestic tourists to enjoy our hotels, service, culinary experiences, entertainment and of course the natural beauty of Riviera Maya and Cancun.”
Tournament Director Joe Mazzeo commented that the growth of golf in Mexico has accelerated over the last 12 years thanks in part to the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Thanks to the incredible experiences enjoyed by the professionals during the event, PGA TOUR players have become some ofthe best ambassadors for the event and the Riviera Maya and Cancun destinations.

Among the main goals since the event’s founding in 2007 has been to grow the game of golf. And in the ensuing 12 years, the sport has grown exponentially in Mexico. A prime example is the success enjoyed by Mexican players currently participating on the different professional tours.
PGA TOUR member Abraham Ancer is in position to retain his status as a member on the world’s most prestigious tour. Next week, Ancer will become just the second Mexican to participate in The Open Championship since 2002, when Esteban Toledo last participated. Additionally, Roberto Díaz is currently a member of the PGA TOUR for the 2017-18 season and is fighting to keep his card for next season.
Carlos Ortiz and José de Jesús Rodríguez, current members of the Web.com Tour, have enjoyed great results in 2018 and are slated to become members of the PGA TOUR for the 2018-19 season. Other players still have opportunities to obtain PGA TOUR membership through the Web.com finals. The Mayakoba Golf Classic will once again award three special exemptions for Mexican professionals, assuring tremendous representation of Mexico at this year’s event as is tradition.
