Mark Wilson, Champion of the 2009 PGA TOUR Mayakoba Golf Classic, Visits Rio Secreto

On his recent trip to Mayakoba and the Riviera Maya, 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic champion Mark Wilson combined his time for golf and Golf PARa Todos with an excursion to the region’s most spectacular natural wonder, Rio Secreto.

"Unique, impressive, something I've never seen before in my life," Wilson said upon exiting the river.

Rio Secreto welcomed the 2009 champion thanks to its partnership with the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Mark Wilson won his second career tournament on the PGA TOUR at the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic, earning him a total of $648,000 of the Mayakoba Golf Classic’s $3.6 million USD purse.

Wilson finished at 13-under-par 267 for the tournament in 2009, with a 68 in the final round to win by two strokes over his nearest competitor.

Rio Secreto consists of several hundred meters of paths through the cenotes and underground river system of Quintana Roo. Partially submerged in water, visitors are require to walk, wade and swim through various areas of the system. Opened to the public in 2008, Rio Secreto has quickly established itself as the premier natural attraction in the Cancun and Riviera Maya regions.

Wilson, who will participate in the PGA TOUR’s 2010 Mayakoba Golf Classic next month, was amazed at seeing Rio Secreto, he entered a new uncertain world where he learned about stalactites, stalagmites, pearls, corals and other mineral formations. The excursion took him to an underground universe that has developed over millions of years.

The trail through the underground river allowed Wilson the chance to appreciate all the wonders around him while walking and swimming in crystal clear waters, hearing only the sound of the constant dripping of water and the waves caused by his own movement.

“Unique, impressive, something I’ve never seen before in my life,” Wilson said upon exiting the river.

OHL's ecological diligence has served it well in México, where strong government regulations are enforced to protect the environment. A presence in México since 1980, OHL employs over 2,000 people there and has built highways, bridges, hotels and hospitals. The tourism complex at Mayakoba, which will eventually include two or three golf courses and six luxury hotels, is OHL's most ambitious hospitality project to date.

El Camaleón Golf Course at the Mayakoba resort is Greg Norman's latest masterwork. The 7,039-yard layout is unique - not just to Mexico but to the entire world of golf. The course bends through three distinct landscapes—mangrove jungles, limestone canals and stunning, oceanfront stretches of sand. El Camaleón incorporates a cenote, a massive underground cavern, into the heart of the opening fairway. The handsome, Mayan influenced clubhouse that rises above the 18th green will feature a fine dining room with stunning views over the course.  The adjoining practice facility and driving range are of international caliber.  With Mayakoba's unique system of lagoons, golfers will be able to step out of their rooms and into a boat, which will ferry them directly to the first tee. El Camaleón Golf Course is managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
