Wilson Holds On For Second TOUR Title |
Mark Wilson took over the lead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic for good with two early birdies in the final round, yet had to fight through some wobbly play down the stretch to earn his second career PGA TOUR victory.
The co-leader after the second and third rounds, Wilson shot a 68 to win by two strokes over J.J. Henry. Wilson had an easy putt to par the final hole and finish at 13-under 267 for the week.
At 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, Wilson fits the mold of the previous two winners of this event, Fred Funk and Brian Gay. Like the other little guys, he tamed the 6,923-yard, par-70 El Camaleón course by keeping tee shots in the fairways and mastering the speed of the greens.
Wilson's only previous victory was at the Honda Classic in 2007, and it took winning a four-man playoff. But four days on Mayakoba’s El Camaleón were all it took for Wilson to earn his second TOUR victory and the $648,000 USD paycheck.
